Our verdict
Under the hood you get the same WireGuard network from Mullvad either way. The difference is everything around it. Mullvad direct requires no account, accepts anonymous payments, and charges one flat rate that never changes. Mozilla VPN wraps the same network in a familiar Mozilla account and your subscription supports the maker of Firefox.
For pure privacy, Mullvad wins; Mozilla VPN is the sympathetic pick if you already live in the Firefox ecosystem.
“Mullvad plays no marketing games. Flat price, no account, no logs. For pure privacy, this is the most honest service we know. For streaming, look elsewhere.”Editorial team, on Mullvad VPN
“Mullvad’s network with Mozilla’s name on it. The same WireGuard servers, sold by a company whose whole mission is an open internet. Small feature set, big trust.”Editorial team, on Mozilla VPN
Frequently asked questions
Is Mozilla VPN just Mullvad with a different name?
Close to it. Mozilla VPN runs entirely on Mullvad's WireGuard server network, so the connection you get is the same either way, and both cap you at five devices. What differs is everything around it. Mullvad direct needs no account and accepts cash, while Mozilla VPN wraps the same network in a familiar Mozilla account and supports the maker of Firefox.
What do Mullvad and Mozilla VPN cost?
Mozilla VPN is $9.99 month to month, or $4.99 a month on a twelve-month plan, $59.88 a year (US dollars). Mullvad charges one flat monthly rate that never changes and needs no commitment. Mullvad does not set its price in US dollars, so we list no Mullvad amount here. Its own pricing page shows the current figure.
Do I need an account for Mozilla VPN?
Yes, a Mozilla account with an email address. Mullvad asks for neither. You get a randomly generated number and can pay in cash. If anonymity is the reason you are shopping, that alone settles it. If you already use Firefox and have a Mozilla account, the extra step costs you nothing worth worrying about.
Can I stream with Mozilla VPN?
There is no streaming optimization, and the server list is shorter than the big names offer. That is deliberate, because Mozilla VPN keeps the feature set small. Connect, pick a location, done. Mullvad is no better here, since streaming is not a priority there either. If unblocking streaming libraries is part of the plan, neither of these two is the right pick.
