Question & answer

Does a VPN work on a smart TV?

The short answer

Yes, in three ways: an app on the TV itself (Android TV, Google TV, and Fire TV), running the VPN on your router, or sharing from another device. The app route is by far the easiest if your TV supports it.

If your TV runs Android TV, Google TV, or Fire TV, it is simple: virtually every major provider, including NordVPN, Surfshark, and ExpressVPN, has an app in the TV's app store. Install, sign in, connect, done.

TVs from Samsung and LG run their own systems without VPN apps. The clean solution there is setting up the VPN on your router, which automatically protects everything in the house; most providers publish guides, though it takes some technical confidence. A middle road is plugging in a streaming stick that does support VPN apps, like a Fire TV Stick.

If streaming is your goal, make sure your provider plays well with streaming services in the first place; see our guide to the best VPN for streaming for the ones that do.
