Does a VPN work with Netflix?
With the big providers, usually yes: NordVPN, Surfshark, and PrivateVPN worked reliably with Netflix in our tests. Streaming services actively block known VPN servers, so smaller or free VPNs often hit an error screen instead.
Netflix and other streaming services detect and block IP addresses that belong to known VPN servers. It is a constant cat-and-mouse game: the big providers rotate in fresh IP addresses all the time, while smaller outfits cannot keep up. That is why streaming tends to work with the top names and fail with free or budget services.
In our tests, NordVPN and Surfshark were the most dependable streaming picks, and the small Swedish provider PrivateVPN punched far above its weight. Mullvad and Mozilla VPN deliberately do not chase streaming, so do not expect miracles there.
One caveat: bypassing regional restrictions can conflict with your streaming service's terms of use. In practice, enforcement rarely goes beyond blocking the VPN connection itself, but it is worth knowing where you stand.
